09/28/2007 - Milwaukee, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Scott Hairston knocked in three runs as the San Diego Padres took advantage of five Milwaukee errors to beat the Brewers, 9-5, in the opener of a critical four-game set at Miller Park.
Khalil Greene hit a key two-run single in the seventh inning for the Padres, who hold a one-game lead over the Phillies/Mets for the NL Wild Card lead and remained one game behind Arizona for the NL West lead.
In his fourth career start, Jack Cassel gave up two runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings. Joe Thatcher (2-1) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief to pick up the win.
Rickie Weeks hit two home runs for the Brewers, who failed to gain ground on the NL Central-leading Cubs for the second-straight game. Chicago remains two games in front of Milwaukee.
Rookie of the Year candidate Ryan Braun hit his 35th home run of the season but committed three of Milwaukee's season-high five errors.
Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo (9-5) was tagged for five hits and five runs -- three earned -- through five innings with seven strikeouts and a walk.
San Diego struck first with a four-spot in the third inning. The Padres loaded the bases on three straight singles before Hairston ripped a double to left to score two runs. Geoff Jenkins' fielding error allowed a third run to score and sent Hairston to third. Kevin Kouzmanoff's subsequent groundout made it 4-0.
Milwaukee answered on Weeks' solo homer in the bottom of the third before San Diego scored another run in the fourth as Cassel grounded into a bases-loaded double play.
J.J. Hardy's RBI single in the fifth brought the Brewers within 5-2, but Thatcher retired Prince Fielder with the bases loaded and the Padres put up four runs in the seventh.
Brady Clark led off the inning with a walk and pinch-hitter Oscar Robles reached on a Braun error. Brian Giles' infield single off Ray King loaded the bases and Hairston's single off Chris Spurling plated Clark.
Kouzmanoff grounded into a force out at home, but Adrian Gonzalez lofted a sacrifice fly and Greene's two-out single off of Braun's glove made it 9-2.
Weeks' two-run home run in the home half of the seventh followed by Braun's solo shot made it a four-run game, but Justin Hampson relieved Doug Brocail and struck out Fielder to end the inning.

Milwaukee's five errors were its most since August 1999...Braun knocked in his 95th run of the season...Attendance was 34,918.

The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
