07/01/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando did not allow a single goal in the month of June and was recognized on Wednesday night as the MLS Player of the Month.
Rimando and Real Salt Lake posted shutouts in all three games in June, against D.C. United, the Los Angeles Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes. RSL extended its overall club-record undefeated and home unbeaten streaks in league play to eight (6-0-2) and 17 games (11-0-6), respectively.
"I'm very proud to receive this honor, one that really reflects the work the team has been putting in lately," Rimando said. "Our coaches continually stress the importance of us keeping clean sheets, so this award is a testament to the entire defense in front of me - and to all the players working on that side of the ball."
Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis credited Rimando with single-handedly earning a tie against San Jose last Friday after his season-high eight saves preserved a 0-0 draw.
"At the end of the game, I'm patting Nick Rimando on the back and saying, 'You just saved us two points and saved us from giving San Jose all three,'" Kreis said.
Rimando is the second straight Real player to win the award, following Alvaro Saborio. It marks just the fifth time in MLS history that players on from the same team won the award in back-to-back months.
The 31-year-old won the Player of the Month award for the second time, and is just the second goalie to ever win award twice. Brad Friedel, who currently plays for Aston Villa in the English Premier League, won the award in 1996 and 1997 for the Columbus Crew.
2010 MLS Player of the Month winners:
April: Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy)
May: Alvaro Saborio (Real Salt Lake)
